Common questions, step-by-step guides, and direct-contact options for VFL Toolkit on Mac, iPad, and iPhone. If you can't find what you need here, email us — a Virginia family law attorney reads every message.
Four steps to a working Virginia practice in the app.
VFL Toolkit starts with a handful of setup steps that unlock everything else. Do these once, and every matter, worksheet, and document picks up your firm information automatically.
Set your firm info
Name, Virginia State Bar number, address, phone, fax (optional), and email. This information appears on every PDF signature block and Certificate of Service you generate.
Create your first matter
Add parties, children, opposing counsel, and court details. The matter profile becomes the single source of truth that every calculator, template, and document pulls from.
Run a calculation
Open a support calculator, fill in the income, custody, and add-on fields, and generate a court-ready DC-637 / DC-638 / DC-640 worksheet in seconds. Save it to the matter.
Export a deadline schedule
Pick a pretrial template that matches your court, enter the trial date, and push the full deadline schedule to Apple Calendar — or share a universal .ics file.

How much does VFL Toolkit cost?
One subscription covers Mac, iPad, and iPhone — every calculator, every pretrial template, every motion, every hearsay exception, every trial drill, and every document template included.
- Monthly: $39.00 / month
- Annual: $399.00 / year (works out to $33.25 / month — saves about 15%, roughly $69 a year vs. paying monthly)
- 7-day free trial on either plan
Less than a single expert-witness hour per month. No per-matter fees, no add-on modules, no team-seat tier, no surprise upsells. Cancel anytime in your Apple ID subscription settings.
Is the Mac app a separate purchase?
No. The Mac app is included with your subscription at no additional cost. It is true native macOS — not Catalyst, not a port — with custom menu commands, resizable windows, and desktop-class document generation. Sign in with the same Apple ID you used on iPhone or iPad and your subscription unlocks the Mac app automatically.
Which Virginia courts are covered by the pretrial templates?
Fifteen court-specific templates plus a custom builder. Current coverage:
- Alexandria, Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, Loudoun, Prince William, Richmond Metro / Henrico, Norfolk, Newport News, Suffolk, Chesapeake Circuit
- Virginia Beach Circuit (civil and divorce) and Virginia Beach J&DR
- 9th Circuit (Williamsburg / James City / York-Poquoson / Gloucester)
- A custom pretrial order builder for any other court
Additional courts are added based on user requests. Send us yours through the contact form.
Is my client data stored on your servers?
No. By default, every matter, calculation, document, and worksheet is stored locally on your device using SwiftData. There is no developer server holding your plaintext — not now, not ever.
If you enable "Sync across my Apple devices" in Settings, your data syncs to your private CloudKit database in your own iCloud account, reaching every device signed into the same Apple ID. That sync does not go through a server we operate.
Is there a free trial?
Yes — a 7-day free trial is included with both the monthly and annual subscriptions. You won't be charged until the trial ends, and you can cancel anytime in your Apple ID subscription settings before the trial ends to avoid any charge.
How do subscriptions work on the App Store?
Subscriptions are billed and managed through Apple. Your Apple ID is charged at purchase confirmation and at each renewal. Subscriptions auto-renew unless canceled at least 24 hours before the period ends. Unused portions of a free trial are forfeited when you purchase.
Manage or cancel your subscription at any time: Settings → [Your Name] → Subscriptions on iPhone/iPad, or App Store → [Your Name] → Subscriptions on Mac.
How does the encrypted client intake work?
Generate a secure .vflintake form from any matter. Your client fills it out in their browser and submits it back — the form is encrypted end-to-end using AES-256-GCM (symmetric) or ECIES (asymmetric, attorney-only decryption). You decrypt the returned file locally in the app.
No third-party server ever holds the plaintext. You choose which of the 21 intake sections the client sees, and the form handles repeater rows for children, assets, debts, vehicles, retirement accounts, exhibits, and witnesses.
Does it work on iPad and Mac too?
Yes — one subscription covers iPhone, iPad, and Mac. iPad uses a three-column split view with adaptive styles. Mac is true native macOS (not Catalyst), with custom menu commands and resizable windows. Minimum OS: iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26.
Can I redact Social Security numbers, driver's licenses, and account numbers?
Yes — and the attorney decides each time. Before any document leaves the device, VFL Toolkit shows a Redact sheet so you can choose what to mask. Defaults differ by document:
- PDF worksheets, pretrial orders, witness lists render in full by default (court filings usually require the unredacted value). Tap Redact on the PDF preview and toggle SSN, DL, accounts, DOB, address, phone, email, or children's identifiers as needed.
- Word templates (.docx) mask SSN, driver's license, and consumer financial account numbers (credit cards, loans, checking, savings) to last‑4 by default. Retirement plan numbers and health-insurance fields render in full so the document is filing‑ready. Override anything before tapping Generate.
- Confidential Addendum is filed under seal under Va. Sup. Ct. R. 1:21, so it renders full SSN/DL/account numbers by default. The Redact sheet still appears if you ever want to mask categories.
The full value always remains stored on the device for the attorney's reference; redaction only changes what appears in the exported document.
Do I need a ShareFile or iCloud account to use the app?
No. All integrations are optional. You can use every calculator, template, document generator, motion, hearsay reference, and trial drill without connecting any third-party service. Connect ShareFile only if your firm already uses it. iCloud sync is opt-in and runs through your own Apple ID — there is no developer-operated server in the loop.
Why no Clio, Google Drive, Dropbox, or Outlook integration?
By design. VFL Toolkit is an Apple-native, attorney-controlled tool. Matter data stays on your device by default and only flows through services where you control the keys: Apple Calendar (EventKit), iCloud Drive, your private CloudKit database (opt-in), and ShareFile (your firm's vault). We deliberately don't route privileged matter data through Google, Microsoft, Dropbox, or third-party practice-management clouds.
If you need to reach another cloud provider, you can save any generated PDF to the system Files app and use the provider you already have installed. Apple Calendar exports also produce a universal .ics file that any calendar app on any platform can open.
Where can I delete my data or close my account?
Go to Settings → Data & Privacy → Delete All Data. This disconnects every integration, deletes every matter and calculation, clears calculator state, flushes every Keychain token, and resets the app to its initial state. It's a single-tap full wipe.
To close your subscription: manage it in your Apple ID subscription settings. Deletion within the app does not automatically cancel billing; Apple handles subscription cancellation.
Is this legal advice?
No. VFL Toolkit is a professional productivity tool for licensed Virginia attorneys. Calculations are based on current Virginia statutes, rules, and guidelines, but the output is not legal advice and the app does not create an attorney-client relationship. Always verify calculations independently before relying on them in any proceeding. The responsibility for the work product remains with the attorney.
Managing your subscription.
All billing runs through Apple — we never see your payment details. Here's how to change or cancel your subscription.
Change or cancel on iOS
- Open the Settings app
- Tap your name at the top
- Tap Subscriptions
- Find VFL Toolkit Pro and tap to manage, change plans, or cancel
Change or cancel on macOS
- Open the App Store
- Click your name at the bottom-left sidebar
- Click Account Settings then Manage next to Subscriptions
- Find VFL Toolkit Pro and edit as needed
Manage via apple.com
You can also manage any Apple subscription by visiting apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions while signed in to your Apple ID.
Request a refund
Apple handles all refund requests for App Store purchases. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, find the VFL Toolkit purchase, and choose "Request a refund." We cannot issue refunds directly.
Control over what you've created.
You own your data. These are the three most common operations attorneys ask about.
Export a matter or worksheet
- Open the matter, worksheet, or generated document you want to export
- Tap the share icon in the upper-right corner
- Choose Save to Files, Mail, ShareFile, or iCloud Drive
- PDFs are signed with your firm information; before sharing, tap Redact to mask any sensitive identifiers you do not want in the exported file
Turn iCloud sync on or off
- Open the app and go to Settings → Sync
- Toggle Sync across my Apple devices
- Restart the app to apply the new setting
- A status row shows your live iCloud account state when sync is on
Disconnect an integration
- Go to Settings → Integrations
- Tap the integration you want to disconnect (ShareFile, iCloud sync, etc.)
- Tap Disconnect — this revokes OAuth tokens and removes them from the Keychain
- Your local matters are not affected by disconnection
Delete everything (full wipe)
- Go to Settings → Data & Privacy → Delete All Data
- Confirm the action — this cannot be undone
- Every matter, calculation, document, saved worksheet, and integration token is deleted
- Your subscription is not canceled automatically; cancel separately via Apple (see above)
Is it you, or is it us?
VFL Toolkit runs on-device, so most issues are local. If something seems broken at scale — authentication, OAuth, app launches — it'll show here.
What's new.
Release notes for every TestFlight and App Store update will live here once the app launches.
VFL Toolkit hasn't launched yet on the App Store. The first release note entry will appear here when version 1.0.0 ships.
